Artist’s Statement: The Women Series

Often overlooked in the world of art, is the power of, and the place for, laughter. Movies have their comedies, television has its sit-coms, theater has stand ups and musicals, and music has accepted parodies of other pieces. The visual arts however, have limited fun and humor to comic books, magazine illustrations and even folk art creations. My paintings are done to make you laugh; or more importantly, to make ME laugh. I am a traditional painter, acrylic on canvas using a brush, which seems rather old fashioned in the art world of today. It suits my purpose however, which is to poke fun at every day situations that sometimes aren’t all that funny to begin with. I don’t need deep symbolism or any of that inner message stuff. My titles and my characters, like a story, will tell you how I feel and what is happening; a bad day at the office, standing in an endless line, turning a year older, not much fun in that ! My work hopes to change your perspective.

Personally, there is enough fear, anger, and discontent in both our daily lives and our current society to encompass other media. Browse in a gallery and forget all that angst, to just smile, explore, contemplate and perhaps relate, are what I hope viewers will do. According to my guest books from previous venues, many people bring back a friend or two to share in the fun of one of my shows. That proves to me I am successful at what I do and being rewarded for doing it. Maybe I am old fashioned, just like my technique, but I paint for myself and in my own way. Chastised in the past for not being “serious” enough in my work, I say to that….so what? Since when did it become a bad thing to make someone else feel good for looking at your work?

It is a tough sell in today’s art climate to present something light hearted and fun, but with a message deeper than what one may first encounter. Patrons have told me how much more they find each time a painting is seen. I just smile, and know that each one has more to say than most people care to find. If all one does is laugh, then my art has done its most important job. If one says, “Wow, I can relate to that!” or, “Is that so and so?” all the better, because my art has touched something inside.
